The gameplay is pretty simplistic, with the core mechanic trumping the building aspect of the game. So kudos to XGen and Nintendo for developing a look that focuses more on the gameplay mechanic than on some mythical 'edge'.Īll in all, this is not a 'must buy' game. IHMO, all they're doing is making their game inaccessible and undesirable to a large class of players. I've worked with a lot of Flash developers, and they seem to think they're being 'cool' or 'edgy' by adding in blood, guts, and gore. On a personal note, I like how the gratuitous violence was toned down for this release. (I especially love the clouds hanging by yarn. While the new graphics never gel into more than the sum of their parts, they do look nice and greatly help smooth out the gameplay. The graphics of the game are great! The game has a home-project look to it as if an accountant got bored and decided to make a game on paper. This keeps the game moving at times when the Flash game just left you scratching your head.

Adding archers, masons, deploying suicide bombers, and developing 'magic' are all intuitive actions that take no time to understand and use. Thankfully, that's been smoothed out in the Wii version. The use of the castle's defenses was a bit hard to get a grasp on in the Flash game. (It's kind of cool to have just defeated a horde, only to have all their little stick/button bodies come crashing to earth seconds later! Mwhahaha!) This is a great improvement over the Flash game, where it felt like the only effective method of dispatching enemies was to smash them against the ground. With a slight flick of the wrist, you can send an enemy flying so far that you won't see him for another 5 seconds or so. The characters are super-easy to whip around the screen.

The GOOD news is that it received a solid upgrade in the physics, control, and graphics departments! There really aren't any gameplay upgrades over that version. The bad news is that the gameplay is almost exactly like the Flash game. The minigame comes at a bargain too, with a price of only 500 Wii Points! Instead, Xgen took it to the next level by creating an updated and awesome looking game for WiiWare. The Wii version of Defend your Castle is definitely not the gimpy little port that it could have been.

The game will be able to detect how far you threw the enemy by tracking your wrist-flicking speed which, according to Xgen, “feels much more intuitive.”

The Wii version even takes advantage of the Wii Remote by using the accelerometer in Nintendo’s unique controller. If you have to get the door, all you have to do is lay the Wii-mote on your coffee table and the game will detect one less player and automatically adjust. Xgen explains that if you’re playing Defend your Castle by yourself while waiting for some friends to show up, anyone can pick the Wii Remote up as they arrive and start playing. The 4-player mode also features a unique jump-in/jump-out style of gameplay with dynamic difficulty adjustments. The Wii version also offers 4-player cooperative gameplay and new game modes such as “King of the Castle,” where the player with the highest score at the end of the level is crowned king, and is given the opportunity to upgrade the castle, cast spells, or train units. But after every stage, you are given time to purchase upgrades and fortify your castle.įor those of you who have already played the game, you are probably thinking, “oh, I’m not going to buy this because I can play it for free!” But the WiiWare version of Defend your Castle is completely revamped with updated graphics, mechanics, and new Wii-specific upgrades. Every stage gets harder and harder, as the enemy becomes faster, stronger, and more plentiful. As the enemy gets closer, you take your God-like hand, grab the helpless little men, and throw them mercilessly into the air. Defend your Castle places you on a grassy plain with invaders attacking you from the west.
